Do I need to be good at art to access art psychotherapy?
Not at all! Art psychotherapy is not about artistic skill or creating ‘good’ art. Art therapy is about exploring thoughts and feelings in a way that may feel more accessible than words alone.
What happens in an art psychotherapy session?
Sessions are largely tailored to the individual. Some people choose to use art materials throughout the session, while others may talk more, play, reflect or move between different wats of expressing themselves. There is no right or wrong way to engage.
Who is art psychotherapy suitable for?
Art therapy can support children, adolescents and adults experiencing a wide range of emotional, relational and behavioural difficulties.
How long does therapy last?
This can vary depending on individual needs and goals. I arrange regular reviews where we discuss next steps and endings to ensure that we come to an end in an effective, beneficial way.
Can parents stay in the session?
Usually it is recommended that the parent is not in the therapy room, unless a joint piece of work is happening. This is to allow the young person to build a sense of trust and to facilitate a therapeutic relationship. However, it depends on the age, needs and comfort of the young person. This is something that can be discussed together to ensure everyone is comfortable.
Are the sessions confidential?
Yes, sessions are confidential, even when working with children. However, as with all therapists, there are limits to confidentiality where there are concerns about safety or safeguarding.
Do you offer online sessions?
yes, I offer both in-person and online sessions.
How do you work in a neuro-affirming way?
My practice is grounded in a neuro affirming approach that values and respects neurodivergent ways of experiencing and relating to the world. Therapy is adapted to the individual, rather than expecting the individual to adapt to therapy.
I have over 8 years’ experience working with children, young people, and adults across a range of educational, therapeutic, and care settings.
I have significant experience supporting individuals with emotional, social, and behavioural difficulties, including autism, ADHD, attachment difficulties, and mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. I have also worked extensively with individuals who have spent significant periods of time within hospital and care settings.
My clinical experience includes working therapeutically with individuals who have experienced trauma, including sexual, physical, and psychological abuse, as well as those experiencing suicidal thoughts and self-harm.
I am trained in the ADOS-2 assessment process and complete ADOS-2 assessments for two paediatricians for those seeking a private formal autism assessment. I offer consultations for parents and young people considering a formal autism assessment, supporting them to explore concerns and considering whether pursuing assessments may be beneficial.
Alongside my clinical work, I also provide workshops and training for schools and other settings supporting neurodiverse young people.
